Midnight Sun Golf Club - Yellowknife N.W.T

Designer: Andre Quenneville

Course Description:

Welcome to the land of the midnight sun! Located in Canada's high north, Midnight Sun Golf Club creates a unique experience for golfers. With it's high latitude, summers are short in the north, but summer days are never ending. A few days a year, the sun never goes down, which allows for some spectacular golf anytime of day (even in the middle of the night!). Midnight Sun Golf Club is a Par 72, 7150 yard layout that weaves through the hills of the Yellowknife region. Stay up late and book a tee time for a truly unique experience!

Staff Review:

Many hole-in-the-wall courses use their odd location as a piece of marketing, to attract people who want to say they've played a course in some remote or otherwise ridiculous place. Midnight Sun Golf Club in Yellowknife is not one of those courses. It is a destination.

As you fly in on the shores of Great Slave Lake, you can tell you're in the wilderness. The course is perfectly rustic, just how you would expect it to be in northern Canada. The clubhouse, nice but understated, is unimportant here. It is all about the golf. The starter announces your name after the 1:48 AM tee time, you have to form your plan of attack: Will you hang back and take three shots to reach the green, or challenge the Yellowknife River for an eagle chance? On the second tee will you go left, right, or split the trees to find the fairway? Strategic options are abundant on every hole. I believe the best course is the one where you remember the most holes when you're done, and by this standard, MSGC is fantastic. Every hole has some features that make it stand out from the rest. Bottom line, every player should experience Midnight Sun. It is one of the premier courses on TGC Tours and I'm sure one of the tours will be tested by it in the near future.

Nicely done course with realistic elements in the design. Hole number 8 stands out as a really good looking hole. The only negative I have is the rocks used I think were too big, however that does not detract from the playability or fun in the course.

Pro: Very well done course, nice bunkers, slopes, greens, layout, lighting, everything is almost perfect.

Con: Uneven tee blocks, I counted at least 3. Stone work did not look natural to me in some places and was out of place in others. The tree placements near the tees could of used more thought to wind conditions. Hence the 4.5 and not the 5 it could of easily achieved.

Really enjoyed this course, played very tough in 15-19 mph winds. Defo play again in calmer conditions

Everything was excellent on this course.  Overall I'm not a fan of darker courses but it works here with the theme.

Finally pulled myself away from the course designer long enough to play a little golf. Very glad that I did. This is a beautifully crafted golf course. Thoughtful and imaginative hole routing. Definitely a course that I would love to play in real life.

Pros

-Imagination and execution in hole design
-Lighting was at a near perfect level. No issues with darkness.
-Creativity with planting of vegetation and objects.

Cons

-Simply a nitpick, personal preference, but the boulders on two holes seemed a little out of place. Not anything to take away from scoring this a 5.
