Newfoundland CC

Designer: Joseph Bowling

Course Description:

A north-central Kentucky landscape based around the Licking River watershed. Course rewards strategic play. If fences, horses, and barns existed in the HB universe, you could envision a trip to Keeneland to follow your round.

Staff Review:

I finish a long day work and head to my favorite course just in time for one of the final rounds of the day. Excited for the opening par 5, 575 yards down hill. I wonder if I will go for it in two and give myself a chance at eagle to start the round. Or will I hit my second shot with too much of a draw or leave it short and find the water or bunker protecting the green? My round continues through a classic course that reminds me of some of my favorite courses growing up. But don’t be fooled it is long and the greens require patience and touch. There are six par fours over 460 yards! The monster long 12th, a whopping 501 yards with a tight fairway protected by bunkers and an up hill green! I named it “the BEAST”! Challenging you every time, just trying to destroy your round. Number 8 is a short beautiful par 3 to a peninsula green, sure to get your heart racing. The final hole 18 is another par 5 that follows a lake to the right and bunkers line the left of the fairway. The green is protected by water and bunkers, giving you another decision to make, go for it or layup and play it safe.

This is the fifth course submitted by Joseph Bowling. Congratulations on achieving your first 5 stars! You can easily see the time and attention that Joseph took to create Newfoundland CC. It has beautiful sculpting and planting. The greens are rewarding a subtly contoured but don’t give up too many simple putts. Bunkers have nice shapes and simple sculpting to them.

The only negative that can come from this course, is a slow frame rate on some of the shots. Possibly from too much planting. It is truly a challenge to create the course exactly the way you see it and not to over do the planting. But even with that, I still enjoyed my round and love the classic layout of this course.
