Pinehurst #2 (Blue Tees)

Designer: Craig LeVasseur

Course Description:

The course can be described as a hybrid between the Coore & Crenshaw restored course and the more traditionally roughed course featured in the 99 and 05 US Opens. There are several waste bunkers designed to look like the "natural areas" of the restored course, but there is plenty of rough, as well. The fairways are extremely wide and replicate the restored fairways, as opposed to the more narrow fairways of the roughed course. This version, the Blue Tees, is several hundred yards shorter than the maxed out U.S. Open version. All of the pin locations are authentic to last year's U.S. Open, and the greens are medium firmness and speed to keep approach shots from repelling off of the turtleback greens, to a degree.

Here it is... another masterpiece by Craig LeVasseur, the creator of the well known Magnolia National, host of The Masters 2015.

Pinehurst #2 (Blue Tees) is meant "to be a hybrid between the Coore & Crenshaw restored course and the more traditionally roughed course featured in the 99 and 05 US Opens" (original comment by Craig).

After my round on this course I have to say that this statement is more than just empty words. The look of the course is very authentic, and you actually feel like playing on an US Open Course.

With limited options coming from the Greg Norman Course Designer, he still managed to recreate those "waste areas" very nicely.

If there is something to complain about, it is the fact that I had quiet low FPS during my round (playing on PS4) in some areas of the course. I guess that this came from the huge number of trees (especially on the front nine), which shadow very large parts of the holes. I don't wanna blame the designer for that, but still wanted to mention it.

As far as difficulty is concerned, this version of Pinehurst #2 is quiet fair. The course conditions and pins are at medium difficulty, which may be a bit too easy to make this a stop for the PGA and/or European Tour. But it's surely worth for one of the lower tours, no doubt about that.

Pros:
  • very authentic course
  • fantastic work on the bunkers & "waste areas"
  • quiet fair pin positions
  • good variety with the greens (some very easy, some hard if you don't hit the right spot)

Cons:
  • low FPS on some areas of the course (PS4; don't know about other platforms)

Summary: Fantastic work, Craig! Once again...
