Wells Creek Golf & Hunt Club

Designer: Joseph Bowling

Course Description:

Under new management, and no longer denying its roots, welcome to Wells Creek Golf and Hunt Club. Wells Creek Golf Course is situated along the Little Sandy River in Eastern Kentucky, and is a wonderful fall destination to enjoy golf and the great outdoors. Wells Creek is a par 71 course, measuring at 7079 yards for the championship version, with one short par 5 on the front playing as a par 4. This course was built upon a plot of land purchased from Mr. Zone Fannin, pronounced Zone-ee. After the new influx of tourists, golfers and huntsman alike, Mr. Fannin was quoted as saying, "By Gawd, that course may not be a cow pasture, but I'm gonna put one right next to it!" His solitary house can be found atop one of the rolling hills, coming into view from Hole No. 2, complete with said cow pasture and all. The course signature hole is No. 3, a short par 4, it is a European inspired risk/reward hole. Playing at 297 yards and downhill, even amateurs may take a swing at this one.

A pleasant but easy stroll down memory lane.

From time to time I like to go back and play some of the oldest courses submitted back in the tour's infancy. Its different to see how designers put together their courses with so many fewer options. Quite frankly I think it was far more difficult to construct truly great courses as it was much harder to manipulate the terrain, and a lot less visual options.

This course has a very tidy construction. Well manicured, broadly generous fairways, a handful of bunkers, some changes in direction, limited water hazards, and gently sloping (yet extremely fast) soft greens. Its all a very simple straight forward and visually appealing experience.

The course is really quite easy, I don't even think it would challenge the champions tour players, but would be a nice choice to help get a buddy acquainted with the game.
