Course Description:

Part one of 4 pin setup for Tournament Play. Welcome to the Pittsburgh Field Club. A previous host to a TGC Tour events, this completely new offering uses the Rustic theme and plays and looks as realistic as possible. The course has soft fairways and above average firmness on the greens. Pin placements are fair, and birdie can be made on every hole. The Field Club is a private country club, established in 1882, located six miles (10 km) northeast of downtown Pittsburgh in the suburb of Fox Chapel, Pennsylvania. It underwent a complete renovation in 2014, celebrating 100 years at it's current location. Known simply as The Field Club to Pittsburghers, it hosted the PGA Championship in 1937, where Denny Shute successfully defended his match play title. The club also hosted the Western Open in 1959 as part of Pittsburgh’s bicentennial celebration. PFC co-hosted the Stroke Play portion of 2003 US Amateur Championship, held at Oakmont. It annually hosts the Pittsburgh Open.

Member Reviews:

The Pittsburgh Field Club is part of a heady trio of courses located in close proximity, with the other two being Fox Chapel, a Seth Raynor design, and the famous Oakmont. It doesn't quite match the Shinnecock-National Golf Links-Sebonack trio in greatness or in proximity, but it is still among the best in America.

Originally designed by Alexander Findlay, it has an impressive list of architects who have tinkered with the course over time, including Donald Ross, A.W. Tillinghast, Willie Park Jr, and Robert Trent Jones. The course sits on some incredible rolling property, and the designer here has done a wonderful job capturing the movement of the land, while still keeping everything looking natural. The land almost reminds me a bit of Merion, although turned up a notch. I can attest that it is hard to capture this movement in the game, so the job done here is commendable.

The course plays on the shorter side at 6800 yards, and the holes are very classic in design. There are no extremely difficult drives or approach shots, but playing the angles into the pin will provide you with a better opportunity for a close approach.

The greens are moderately contoured, with no extreme slopes. This should allow for a number of birdies throughout the round, but the max green speeds require caution on downhill putts, which should be avoided, if possible.

This course doesn't necessarily have the wow factor of a course like Pebble Beach, nor does it have the fame that comes with pro tournaments being held there. I would recommend to all who play, though, to recognize the topography of the course and how the holes are routed across the property. I think it is fantastic, and each version of the course deserves a play.
