Despite the name "Pacific Dunes," this is a unique course that seems to be situated on flat, coastal terrain. There is no reminiscence to Tom Doak's Pacific Dunes at Bandon.

Watch out for uneven tee box lies on the first hole! These can pass by even the best designers from time to time.

The second hole's green seems more cartoonish than St Andrews. This is a one-off and is actually a fun green to play. There is not a single easy pin position on this green, but there are a few possible placements on the top tier as well as a tier cut into the middle of what would otherwise be a large false front.

The layout is well thought out. Each hole presents a differently shaped landing area and a fresh challenge. It is a relatively flat course, but some of the fairways have subtle slopes.  Overall the greens are fun and varied.

I Thought the par 5s were the easier holes to score on, and the par 3s were challenging. The pin position on hole 5 is a bit unfair, as is the entire green. Almost impossible to keep the tee shot on the putting surface, even the very back. I'd have to play it more and write down some more notes but I enjoyed playing this course. Some of the bunkers could use some more detail and the course seemed sparsely planted, especially around the water, but the variety of the layout pulls through. The course never made me feel uninterested.

This course is definitely worth a play and perhaps a favorite too. I think this course may be pretty difficult for a "scratch" player, as scoring can be difficult to achieve, even on the easier holes. I would guess that course rating would be around 77, a stout challenge.

I played the reworked version with slower greens, and I really enjoyed it. Shot -2 without aids, so you can play well here. Green are pretty flat for the most part, although if you catch a big slope on your approach you can be left with a long putt.

#11 to me is the best hole. It's a par 5 that will play completely different depending on the wind. If you have a headwind you probably need to hit 5 wood off of the tee, but if you got a headwind you can pull out driver and have a good chance to reach the green in two.

Another excellent course from Rod Simpson.
